Christmas Window Splash at Deroche General Store

At Deroche General Store & Liquor, the spirit of Christmas has come alive as a magical commemoration of Dr. Seuss' classic tale, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," adorns their storefront windows. The window splash painting spanned a couple of days from start to finish. The artwork captivates customers before entering the store with strokes of vibrant colour, the Grinch's mischievous grin, and Whoville's bustling joy. Every twist and turn of the brush was documented using an Akaso EK7000 Pro action camera on the superwide video setting. This allowed the camera to capture the finest details, ensuring that the entire process could be relished by people near and far. The video footage is a testament to the dedication and creativity poured into creating such a whimsical Christmas masterpiece. Christmas Window Splash at Fraser Valley Regional Library

I recently had the opportunity to showcase my creative talents by painting a Christmas window splash at Fraser Valley Regional Library Administrative Centre. The task was to bring a festive and inviting atmosphere to the administrative office space, and I was thrilled to take charge of the design concept. Painting the window spanned over a couple of days, allowing me to craft and execute the artwork. With each stroke of paint, I brought to life a winter wonderland scene adorned with a snowman, vintage baubles, an upside-down book as a tree with gifts and a chill Polar Bear reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The final result was a visually striking display that captured the holiday spirit and instantly drew the attention of staff and visitors alike.

DGS Hand Painted Signs

During the pandemic lockdown (2021/2022), I had the opportunity to take another creative journey into the world of sign painting. I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials, viewed Sign Painters documentary, joined the odd sign painting group on Facebook and purchased some books along with my first sign painting kit and materials from Dragging The Line.

I was lucky to be commissioned to paint three signs for Deroche General Store (DGS), upgrading some outdated generic signage. The signs highlighted sections in the store for the most customer engagement:

1. World Famous Beef Jerky

Final result before taking the sign to the store for installation.

2. Ice Cold Beer Sold Here

It fits nicely above the cooler.

3. Deli Sign

Sandwiches, Deli Meats, Soup, Farmers Sausage, Pepperonis

The overall theme for the signs was to use natural wood and sign paint since the store is in a rural (forested) part of the Fraser Valley. The store is famous for its beef jerky, and folx from all over the Lower Mainland come to purchase their jerky. I incorporated DGS branding (font, colours) into each of the signs for consistency. The signs were hand built with reinforced wood frames to prevent warping, and the layout/designs were transferred using large format (paper) pounce patterns. Some of the processes are visible in the image slideshows below.

If you are passing through Deroche, stop at Deroche General Store and look at the in-store signage. Remember to grab some of their beef jerky too!
