Painting Process

I started the project with a quick couple of sketches of each panel and prepped the plywood by applying 2 coats of gesso. The next step was to freehand the sketches onto the panels. Measurements and cuts were made for approximately where the head height of an average adult and child height would be. Once the panels were where I wanted them to be visually, it was time to apply the acrylic paint. I worked on the Sasquatch panel, starting with a light brown wash on the Sasquatches themselves. From there I began working in the trees, switching back and forth between building up the paint on the Sasquatches and the tree background. The final touches on the panel included detailing the Sasquatch hair/fur, filling in the sky with various shades of blue with some little fluffy clouds, and adding shading/highlights to the trees and Sasquatches.

The WANTED standee project was a bit looser since I was going for an aged poster look to the overall panel. First, I did an overall light brown-yellowish wash over the entire panel, which was very wet, and let the water go where it may. From there, it was onto pencilling in the letters, numbers, and the reward banner. Then, I applied darker brown acrylic for the hair on the couple and worked on the hats and clothes, still being mindful of the aged, wet look. Everything was coming into focus, and it was time to apply black to the pencilled-in words and numbers. The final touches included highlights and shading to our “wanted” couple and a final dark brown wash to the outer edges.
