Scribing Process

Most of the time people see the final product of a scribing and are excited and complimentary. But sometimes the whole creative process from beginning to end result for a scriber is sometimes overlooked.

When I begin I always do some initial research on the client or project and jot down notes and perhaps a few sketches of ideas. For the Ozobots program I prepped a title, logos and a subtle background graphic. I make it a priority for every project to have something started before the event to get me into the mindset of scribing. For the Ozobot project I photographed the process and video recorded myself scribing at the wall. I plan on converting it into a time lapsed video - coming next week.

Introduction to Tarot

Recent live graphic recordings with ApotheCarrie Tarot’s ‘Introduction To Tarot’ workshops held this past October 25, 2019 and November 5, 2019 at Energy Wisdom & Tea Lounge, Mission, BC.

The experiential class gave participants a jump-start on reading tarot for themselves and others by exploring the elements in tarot, providing an overview of the Major and Minor Arcana, tricks for memorization and other tools for their journey.

The graphic recordings were captured during the 2-hour workshops and participants were grateful to have a open and safe space for the conversation. The shared graphic at the conclusion was the fibre that wove the stories together visually.

Take Home Naloxone Update

The Mission Rural Take Home Naloxone Project ended at the end of September 2019 and was a huge success.

  • Increased access to Free THN kits through local businesses.

  • Raised awareness in the community around harm reduction and safe pracitices.

  • Helped the community understand that THN kits are First Aid and save lives.

  • Reduced stigma by facilitating conversation around substance use.

I feel grateful to have been a part of this project with Fraser Health, Mission Community Services, and Fraser House and help my local community.

Cutout Photo Standees

My latest project was a pair of large (7ʼ x 4ʼ) cutout photo standees for “Kids Day” at the local new and used market in Deroche, BC. The market founders wanted one panel to feature an adult Sasquatch with two smaller child-sized Sasquatches. The other panel was a Wild West vibe featuring a “Wanted” poster look and feel to the standee. The materials (plywood and 2ʼ x 4ʼ lumber) were generously donated by RONA (Fraser Valley Building Supplies) in Mission, BC.

Final pieces on display at Kids Day - June 30, 2019

My latest project was a pair of large (7ʼ x 4ʼ) cutout photo standees for “Kids Day” at the local new and used market in Deroche, BC. The market founders wanted one panel to feature an adult Sasquatch with two smaller child-sized Sasquatches. The other panel was a Wild West vibe featuring a “Wanted” poster look and feel to the standee. The materials (plywood and 2ʼ x 4ʼ lumber) were generously donated by RONA (Fraser Valley Building Supplies) in Mission, BC.

I started the project with a quick couple of sketches of each panel and prepped the plywood by applying 2 coats of gesso. The next step was to freehand the sketches onto the panels. Measurements and cuts were made for approximately where the head height of an average adult and child height would be. Once the panels were where I wanted them to be visually, it was time to apply the acrylic paint. I worked on the Sasquatch panel first, starting with a light brown wash on the Sasquatches themselves. From there I began working in the trees, switching back and forth between building up the paint on the Sasquatches and the tree background. The final touches on the panel included detailing the Sasquatch hair/fur, filling in the sky with various shades of blue with some little fluffy clouds, and adding shading/highlights to the trees and Sasquatches.

The WANTED standee project was a bit looser since I was going for an aged poster look to the overall panel. First I did an overall light brown yellowish wash over the entire panel, very wet, and let the water go where it may. From there it was onto penciling in the letters, numbers, and the reward banner. Then, I applied darker brown acrylic for the hair on the couple and working in the hats and clothes still being mindful of the aged wet look. Everything was coming into focus and it was time to apply black to the penciled-in words and numbers. The final touches included highlights and shading to our “wanted” couple along with a final dark brown wash to the outer edges.

The project wasnʼt quite finished as I had to cut and assemble stands for both panels so they would stand up on their own. Overall everyone was very happy with how they turned out and there was lots of engagement on Kids Day and I expect for many markets to come.

Take Home Naloxone

It’s been a busy spring with a couple of recent projects for Mission Rural and Remote THN Project. The first was a community dialogue I graphic recorded in Deroche, BC.

The second is a custom illustration and design of a poster. The aim is to share it offline and online in the rural areas surrounding Mission, BC.

The second is a custom illustration and design of a poster. The aim is to share it offline and online in the rural areas surrounding Mission, BC.

The look and feel of the campaign came about around how people have Naloxone clipped to their bag at all times. That it is first aid and right there in case of emergency. The project team wanted an illustration of this. I came up with a couple of sketches on paper and got approval for one. From there I created a digital version and began design on the poster. The team wanted a comic-book/superhero feel for the poster with bold graphics and colours. I incorporated their vision with the custom illustration and the poster came together.

The poster and upcoming social media awareness campaign I Support Naloxone should help. Especially around saving lives, as it take first responders longer to reach rural areas.
